Argentina continue their warm up for the 2024 Copa America with a friendly against El Salvador on March 22 in the USA.

Without Lionel Messi, Lionel Scaloni will have a chance to test his team without their talisman as they look to get ready for the Copa America this summer. With Lautaro Martinez and Paulo Dybala in form, Argentina will have no shortage of attackers, while the defense led by Cristian Romero and Emi Martinez gives La Albiceleste a base to build off of. Angel Di Maria will still play an important part in the squad providing a creative presence to knit things together as he has for much of the last 15 years.

Here's our storylines, how you can watch the match and more:

Where is Messi?

Despite being named in the squad for these friendlies, Messi had to pull out of international duty due to a hamstring injury. After being withdrawn during Inter Miami's Concacaf Champions Cup match against Nashville SC, Messi proceeded to miss the next match for the Herons before now being ruled out of Argentina's friendlies against El Salvador and Costa Rica. Messi will finally have a chance to rest due to missing these games, but it remains to be seen if it will be enough.

Messi already missed critical matches down the stretch for the Herons last season and Tata Martino won't want that to happen again. While he's back in light training for Miami, he won't be available for their next match against New York Red Bulls as he recovers. A critical player for club and country, all eyes will be on how Messi deals with these leg injuries.

Prediction

Despite missing Messi, Argentina will have no issues dispatching El Salvador as Lautaro and Dybala are among the most in form strikers in the world Pick: Argentina 4, El Salvador 0

Lionel Scaloni's team play two matches in the United States this month with a second friendly up against Costa Rica in Los Angeles on March 26. The defending world and Copa America champions are expected to bring in huge crowds at both games despite the absence of their injured talismanic captain Lionel Messi.

The short answer is no. Messi was initially called up by Scaloni with the Argentina coach confirming he would speak to Inter Miami over Messi's hamstring injury. Speculation has continued that he could still join up with the squad, despite Tata Martino wanting him to rest for the return of the CONCACAF Champions Cup in April, and an agreement is likely to keep him out of action to remain fit in the long term for club and country in 2024.

Despite Messi's absence, Argentina still have the majority of their big guns available for these matches, including Premier League stars Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez and Julian Alvarez. El Salvador's squad is primarily made of players from their domestic league mixed with some MLS based names including goalkeeper Tomas Romero.

Fans were disappointed when Argentina announced this week that Lionel Messi would miss this match, as well as the team’s friendly against Costa Rica in Los Angeles next week, after suffering a “minor injury” in his right hamstring.

But some of Argentina’s biggest stars from its World Cup-winning squad will be present for the two matches, including Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister, Ángel Di María, Julián Álvarez and more.

The 2022 World Cup champions will take on El Salvador in a friendly match where La Albiceleste is heavily favored to come out on top. The Argentinians, who won’t be able to call upon the services of Lionel Messi, will be looking to record a convincing win before facing Costa Rica on Tuesday.

The South Americans have only tasted defeat once in their last 16 games across all competitions, and sit top of the table in CONMEBOL’s 2026 World Cup qualifying tournament.

Argentina will take on a much weaker national team in El Salvador, who are winless in their last 18 matches and have found the back of the net once in their last five outings.

The scene is set at the Lincoln Financial Field, the stage for tonight's international friendly. Home to the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles, it opened in 2003 with a club friendly between Barcelona and Manchester United. With a 68,532 capacity, it was home to three Copa América Centenario matches in 2016. In two years, it will host six World Cup fixtures.

La Albiceleste are looking for some positive results with this international break being the last one before they kick-off their Copa America 2024 campaign in June. Lionel Scaloni's men are looking to retain the South American crown this summer and this game presents an opportunity to enjoy some minutes together before the showpiece event.

El Salvador, on the other hand, have faced Argentina twice and are yet to defeat the South American outfit. La Selecta played out a 1-1 stalemate against Bonaire recently and know they face a tough test against the reigning world champions.
