England host Brazil in a mouth-watering friendly at Wembley tonight.

While international football is not always looked upon favourably during the drama of a domestic campaign, any meeting between the Three Lions and the Selecao evokes strong emotions.

Indeed, the build-up to major tournaments is always fascinating too. Gareth Southgate is preparing to lead England into Euro 2024, where they are probably expected to win or at least compete in the latter stages.

Injury-hit Brazil, meanwhile, are gearing up for the Copa America in the United States this summer after their World Cup disappointment.

England have four friendly matches before the start of Euro 2024 this summer – and they don't get any bigger than this clash with Brazil. Gareth Southgate's side haven't lost since December 2022 – the World Cup quarter-final defeat to eventual finalists France – but they haven't always looked convincing.

A win here would be a real boost ahead of the tournament in Germany, although the last time the Three Lions managed to beat Brazil was more than a decade ago.

Brazil arrive at Wembley with a new man at the helm. Dorival Junior has coached almost every Brazilian club you'd care to mention (sometimes more than once) and the 61-year-old faces a tough assignment for his first game in charge.

The Seleção have lost their last three games, albeit with caretaker boss Fernando Diniz in charge, and rarely get to test themselves against top European opposition outside of a World Cup. Can Junior get off to a winning start?

Five time World Cup winners Brazil return to Wembley Stadium on Saturday for a clash with England that should be one of the most intriguing friendly games of the international break.

Both sides are gearing up for a summer where expectations will be high with the Three Lions among the favorites to win Euro 2024 and their opponents always expected to be at the business end of a Copa America.

Both sides are struggling with a raft of injuries in this critical window for tuning up their options, but there will still be plenty of star power in North London.

As is all too often the case with the Three Lions, the buildup to a major tournament has slipped into farce, a political row erupting over Nike's "playful update" of the cross of St. George, changed from a traditional red to incorporate purple and blue coloring, on the collar of the new home shirt. The kit manufacturer says it has taken inspiration from the training kits worn by the 1966 World Cup winners and the FA has made clear that there are no plans to change the kit despite criticism from the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.

On the field, England will have to cope without absent captain Harry Kane, two-time player of the year Bukayo Saka and Trent Alexander-Arnold, as well as a host of fringe players including Jordan Henderson and Cole Palmer. The absence of Saka and Palmer could hand a first start to Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, but much of the intrigue will come at the center forward position. Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney could well be duking it out for one spot in the Euro 2024 squad as Kane's reserve, whoever gets the start on Saturday may well conclude that the spot is theirs to lose.

It has been a trying year for the most successful international side in world football. The Selecao have cycled through two interim managers post-Tite, while waiting for the man they wanted, the short term hit on results assuaged by the promise Carlo Ancelotti would be coming before too long.

The Italian has now extended his Real Madrid contract meaning that it is 61-year-old Dorival Junior tasked with putting Brazil back on a path that would end with a first World Cup in 24 years. For now, the focus will be on Copa America number 10 in the summer and ending any lingering doubts that they might not be at the World Cup come 2026 -- right now Brazil sit in the last automatic spot in the formative table for South American qualifying.

In Real Madrid duo Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior there is still Brazilian star power and flair but injuries have hit Dorival hard. There is no Neymar, Ederson, Alisson, Marquinhos, Eder Militao, Casemiro or the trio of Arsenal Gabriels, and that is far from a comprehensive list.

The debutant head coach will be calling on plenty of inexperienced players too with 11 potential debutants in his squad and seven more players whose caps number five or fewer.

England has come close at recent competitions, but the current generation of stars has yet to win a major trophy. The Three Lions will hope that changes at Euro 2024 this summer.

The current international window will be the last one before the summer, making the match at Wembley crucial for both teams. England will go into this match missing star striker Harry Kane due to injury, with Jordan Henderson and Cole Palmer also out injured. England has beat Brazil just four times in 25 all-time meetings, with the last match between the two sides ending 0-0 in a 2017 friendly.

Following this match, both teams will close out the international break with another high-profile friendly. England will face Belgium, while Brazil will take on Spain at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid.

Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo could make his England seniors debut before appearing for the Three Lions U21 side. The trio of Jarrad Branthwaite, Anthony Gordon and Ezri Konsa are also eyeing their international debuts.

Southgate will be without the likes of Kieran Trippier, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Jack Grealish, Luke Shaw, Kalvin Phillips and Ben White.

Ollie Watkins will be in line for a start in attack after Harry Kane missed training on Friday, with Jordan Henderson also a major doubt, while Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka dropped out of the squad due to injury.

New Brazil boss Dorival Junior will not be able to avail the services of Alisson Becker, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Magalhaes, Ederson, Marquinhos and Casemiro on account of injuries.

Without Alisson, one of Bento, Leo Jardim and Rafael will make their first-team Brazil debut against England.

Wolves and Sao Paulo midfielders Joao Gomes and Pablo Maia respectively, apart from Porto and Girona wingers Galeno and Savio respectively are also raring for their first cap.
